Protecting the future is both an obligation and a challenge to us. Even today, almost half of the metal required worldwide is extracted from scrap metal – and this ratio is increasing sharply. By recycling steel, approximately 1.2 billion Euros of material costs are saved every year in Germany alone; the costs of energy are lowered by a further 1.1 billion Euros.
Through the melting of a ton of steel scrap in comparison to the use of primary raw materials approx. one ton of CO2, approx. 650 kg of coal as well as 1 ½ tons of iron ore are saved. During the production of steel from secondary materials (scrap) approx. 56 percent less carbon dioxide is produced than with the new production of iron ore. Not only are our global reserves of raw materials conserved, but the emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases is also reduced.
